I was telling someone about AISU and decided to look you up. Imagine my surprise listening to the background song, Miracle, a piece I've not heard before. Lovely piece. You did a nice job painting that picture. He told the cops he was my husband and promised to keep me under better control. I saw someone on the street who looked like him two days ago. I miss John, his birthday was right around now.

Anyhow, I still like listening to your work.

I just read your piece that mentions the NPR voices... fair enough, but I was just thinking how nice that your voice sounded on the "Miracle" track that was playing in the background.

I was a the bassist for a short time in the mid 80's played Graffitti, electric banana, someplace else and of course the Sguirrel Hill American legion more than once.
A short lived and interesting time to be in the presence of a great songgwriter and great musicians.
Keep on telling the truth Robert.

It has been said, and not enough, that The Little Wretches were/are Pittsburgh's most underrated band. Listen to Just Another Nail or Beyond the Stormy Blast and it befuddles the mind these guys never got the following they deserved. But then again , maybe that lack of a mainstream audience just bears witness to their greatness..

I'm so glad I found this site; It's great to hear some of your music again. I just read in your blog that you played a few gigs in the Philly area... That's awesome. I hope I get to catch another performance some day. I'm in DC area now. I know of you from the last days of the Wretches and the beginning of the Mercenes (I'm fortunate to have a When it Snows CD from the release party). I discovered your music through Andy Hoke, who played with you at the time.

Was a big fan of the Chuckie influenced days and was sad to see him leave the group. Now I hear he has left us to be with the lord. Peace be with you all

I played with the Wretches for a short period in the late eighties with Bob,Ellen,Dave and Chuckie.
Played the Banana too many times, someplace else,Squirrel hill American legion(with the Cynics),The Graffitti and some dive in Youngstown,Ohio.
Listen to my born with a gift cassette every so often.
Robert's songs are all about getting your hands dirty just living.
Play on Bob.

Robert A. Wagner is a true to life musical encyclopedia and also a great inspiration to me, especially back in my formulative years... it was always refreshing and informative to speak with Bob on a number of topics, but esp. music... Bob had seen all the greats back in the day when they made a difference, and being a fellow Lou Reed fan[anatic] even further cemented our friendship... I started out as a friend to the band, then "roadied" so I could get into the clubs under-age to see the band perform and would "tape" all the shows on my trusty lil' boombox for posterity, and eventually parked myself behind the drum set for a couple of years and a couple of cd's... The Little Wretches in all of its "incarnations" were incredible, and I was once fortunate enough to see the original line up with John back in the day... The first tape the band ever did is and will always remain my favorite... They were the stuff that legends were made of... The line up I performed with (Bob, Dave and Ellen) took the band to new heights and set the bar even higher in the creativity dept... We brought out the best in each other and this took the music even further... This opened up Bob and Dave to write even more and opened up their "pandora's box" for creativity... We all grew as individuals, but we were one of the tightest units out there... Two examples of this are "Walking Among The Buildings" and "I'll Be Your Mirror" - these two songs show the creativity that came out of the sum, and not of it's parts... I'll never forget my first gig with The Little Wretches @ The Kyber Pass in Philadelphia in January 1990... The band locked into such a groove during "Just About Due" that Dave Losi and I both had the same expression of shock/delight on our faces as the music took us for a ride and we were on an apple cart without a driver... The Little Wretches were my "Velvet Underground" growing up, and I'm glad to have been a part of it, as friend, fan and band member... and as the flyer said back in the early 1980's "...and God Bless the Litte Wretches..."

This site brings back really fond memories. I was a wet-behind-the-ears music critic when I encountered the Wretches in '89 or 90. Best thing that ever happened to me. Opened my eyes (and ears). This music was the soundtrack of my '30s. I'll be listening to the Wretches (and Bob Wagner) for the rest of my life.

Didn't want to be the house band @ The Banana? You guys really were misanthropes. Awesome site.

As a fan of the Little Wretches for more than 20 years, and as a web designer, I can truly say I love this new web site! Bob did a great job of organizing and presenting the material. Easy, clear navigation, and a nice layout and design make this web site very user friendly. And there is a nice diversity in the content. I'm looking forward to reading future blogs, and to hearing a live show sometime soon! And, I'm honored to be mentioned in the Bio. So, Bob...when's the next gig? :-)
